Creating Sustainable Cities: URBANVILLAGER'S Urban Niche

The population of the cities is increasing day by day, and the UN estimates that this population will reach 66 per cent by 2050. As a result, the ecological footprints of the cities are highly influential on the world energy use percentage. Hence, it is crucial to guarantee a sustainable future for our cities. But how? Don’t worry; Urban Villagers will guide you on that path.

Creating a sustainable city may not be easy since it requires strict rules and expectations from the users and the buildings. However, in the long term, their effect will reduce the negative impacts so that these expectations will not bother you. Material choice, LEED certificated complex, user-oriented spaces, integration of greenery, water management, creating new work fields; all of these will require a paradigm shift in the current understanding of a city.

As well as creating a sustainable city, it is also essential to manage that complexity and increase in social interaction is critical.

-green buildings/ green point of view

ICLEI’s Urban Niche in Bahçelievler aims to integrate a green point of view into the existing city fabric. In that regard, creating LEED Certificated complex is beneficial enough to contribute to biodiversity and sustainability topics, rather than boasting issues such as rapid urbanization, climate change and resource scarcity. Green codes and certifications give importance to Planning and design, Energy efficiency, water efficiency and conservation, material conservation and resource efficiency, environmental quality.

Urban agriculture and compost, green roofs, increasing biodiversity, choice of permeable and sustainable materials are the concentrated points of Urban Villagers in understanding green infrastructure.

-economic concept

A sustainable city should create new employment zones to support the citizens. As seen in the proposal, a UrbanVillage concept is an overlap with that issue. With urban farming and greenhouse, a new production area for the farmers of Ankara occurs. Additionally, that act is taking a step further with the ICLEI’s circular development idea. The producers can sell their products in the bazaar area without any commission.

-social concept

That point of view is a way to sustain a lively environment of the complex. A more accessible and user-oriented approach in the design is an essential requirement of that pillar. Urban Village site buildings are facing through an urban plaza where social integration is highly seen. Also, an amphitheatre and open-air projection surface enhance that idea.
